Some of you may have heard of this and others of you haven’t but recently the Russian government passed sweeping new anti-gay legislation. The reason this is news over here is because the 2014 Winter Olympics are being held in Sochi, Russia, and the Russian government has said they will detain and deport any Olympian or tourist during the Olympics who is gay or “pro-gay.” This has caused a few Olympians to speak out against this policy and this week gold medalist snowboarder Seth Wescott spoke out about the new laws. He said: “They’re (gays) wonderful human beings, and I think for them to be discriminated against is a crime,” he said. “They should be able to be who they are and compete proudly. They represent our country incredibly well and they don’t need to be the object of that kind of criticism and negativity.”
It makes me wonder if the Olympics will be affected at all and I wonder what your stance is on it. Will we experience a situation like in the 1968 Olympics with the black power salute? Is there a gay salute? If not can we please get one before the Olympics!?!?!? I would love to see it!
Drop us a comment and let us know your take. Do you think the Olympics should be boycotted? Do you think we should stay out of Russia’s business? Do you think the Gold and Silver medalist should make out on the podium? All great questions….
