Episode 4 of the Tailgate Alaska series features a longtime staple of the Salt Lake shred scene, Dennis Nazari. As owner of Salty Peaks Snowboard Shop, he’s been around as long as snowboarding has needed a shop in SLC. One of the perks of that job for Nazari is holding on to some of the boards he’s sold over the years. Now with a collection of more than 1,000 vintage snowboards, Salty Peaks has become a literal museum, and these days he pro-actively seeks out the rarest of boards to preserve the history of our sport.
So not only did he come out for some AK riding, Nazari also made the trek to Tailgate AK to check out a small company called AK Bommers, a small, local garage outfit producing their own sticks specifically for Alaskan terrain. “One of the motivating factors (to come to AK) was to meet the infamous Donny Mills (owner/builder) and check out AK Bommer boards a little bit,” says Nazari. “You know there’s guys who really don’t have the fancy clean rooms and whatever for R&D and stuff. It’s like, ‘I’m laying up some epoxy in my front room…Don’t touch that ’cause it’s wet…And that’s the thing that’s cool about it.” And well, we couldn’t agree more.
