For those of you who didn’t know, the Gumball 3000 race is going on right now in Europe! This is a race where the extremely wealthy get in crazy performance cars and race across Europe bending rules as they go. Last night in order to raise money for charity Tony Hawk auctioned off a ridden/autographed skateboard as well as an opportunity to come out to Santa Monica and get a private lesson with Hawk and see his headquarters. Prince Talal M. A. Al-Faisal Al-Saud dropped $60,000 for the opportunity.
A quote released by Gumball 3000: “Gumballers generally have substantial income, and I think we held the auction at the perfect time during the arrival party [in Poland],” Hawk told XGames.com via email a few days later from Verona, Italy. “Prince Talal M. A. Al-Faisal Al-Saud of the Saudi Arabian royal family bought [the skateboard and lesson] because he recently watched the Bones Brigade documentary and was inspired by it to start skating.”
Good to see that the most recent documentary on a sport that is about 50 years old got this kid to decide to skate. I’m sure after he falls for the first time his career will be over. If it makes any of you feel better, we all helped pay for this prince’s opportunity by buying that tank of gasoline. If you need any other reason to not like this prince, check out the car he is driving in the Gumball 3000.
