Nyjah Huston says girls shouldn’t skate

Nyjah Huston is in hot water with his publicist this week for a comment he made to Thrasher Magazine. He said:

“Some girls can skate but I personally believe that skateboarding is not for girls at all. Not one bit.”

Today Nyjah came out apologizing saying:

“I want to apologize for the remarks I made in Thrasher about female skateboarders,” he wrote. “What I meant was that skateboarding is a gnarly sport, in general, and as someone who knows the wrath of the concrete all too well, I don’t like the thought of girls (like my little sister) getting hurt. My words were an inaccurate reflection of who I am; more importantly, they were disrespectful and I genuinely regret them.”

Now, I’m not here to crucify Nyjah because at the end of the day he’s 19 and 19-year-olds have a LOT to learn about the world. Like maybe Nyjah doesn’t know that 14.5% of the U.S. military are women. That’s a lot more dangerous than skateboarding. Personally, I don’t understand why everything in humanity has to be a war. Women want to skate? Big deal, let them skate. You don’t want your sister to skate or get hurt? Put her in a bubble and see how far that gets you. This is 2013. Women can vote, women can die for their country, more women are the “breadwinners” of their households than ever. I’m pretty sure they can decide to push a skateboard around and possibly skin their knees. Let’s start judging people by their deeds and not their sex, race, religions, etc.
