WARNING: This blog contains many spoilers for MIVB: The Alien Workshop.
I recently had some good fortune, and won a ticket to a sneak peek screening of the latest Men In Black film, MIVB: The Alien Workshop. However, my good luck turned sour as MIVB left me with a rotten, depressing taste in my mouth.
The movie mostly takes place in the past, beginning 24 years ago with a group of extra-terrestrials from the planet Skaitopia coming to Earth in their state-of-the-art starship, known throughout the galaxy as The Alien Workshop.
For the majority of the film, 11/12 of it to be exact, it showed The Alien Workshop crew establishing themselves on Earth, creating their own peaceful Habitat, proving to all of humanity that they were legit beings with the sole intent of spreading joy throughout our little blue planet. And things were going super well! Humanity was happy, the Workshop gave us some incredibly ground-breaking, innovative visuals and ideas along with supporting some truly talented people. At one point, a large Earth based company, Squrton, took over day-to-day operations of the Alien Workshop, so these talented individuals could have even better support and exposure.
This is where things took a turn for the worse. Throughout the movie, one of the original members of the crew aboard The Alien Workshop, an extra-terrestrial named Bor Kedryd, had become fascinated with life on Earth outside of the Workshop. He became obsessed with shenanigans and tom-foolery of a fantastical nature, striving after the so-called “American Dream” he had heard so much about. He even appeared on a few TV shows to promote his new found lifestyle. It was at this point, that his endeavors outside of the starship allowed him to take over the Workshop from Squrton. What seemed like a good fit at the time, turned out to be the Alien Workshop’s undoing.
Some of their most prominent team leaders began to leave, seeking things outside of the Habitat they had created. It’s at this point that MIB finally show up. They knew of the Alien Workshop, sporadically spying on their efforts from a voyeuristic distance. But once Bor Kedryd took over, the MIB saw his ever growing greed as a chance to move in on the Workshop. Bor’s obsession with everything outside their Habitat left him out of touch with what the starship truly needed to continue it’s mission on Earth, and with the MIB whispering in his ear, he was eventually swayed to hand over control to them. The Men In Black took over the Alien Workshop without any knowledge of their importance or accomplishments on Earth.
In the end, the Men In Black killed off The Alien Workshop in an Old Yeller type fashion, leaving all of us in the audience feeling terrible for the Skaitopians as they were exiled from Earth. Thankfully their Habitat remained in one piece, but the humans were left to figure out who would take it over. I have to give this movie 0 out of 5 stars, as I was truly upset about the loss of The Alien Workshop after all the good they did for us humans.
