While my musical tastes usually hover around punk rock to wonky electronica, there is one genre that holds a special place in my heart. I’m talking about the homegrown, twangy sounds of bluegrass, and in my humble opinion, no one does it better than The Devil Makes Three. The following is an excerpt from the bio on their website since I don’t think I’m articulate enough to write something like this:
“With a slightly punky perspective on vintage American blues, The Devil Makes Three is a breath of fresh musical air on its eponymous Milan debut. Laced with elements of ragtime, country, folk and rockabilly, the critically praised, drummer-less trio – consisting of guitarist/frontman Pete Bernhard, stand-up bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean – brings forth a genuine approach to acoustic music that is deeply steeped in rhythm.”
The show went down at The Depot, which might just be my new favorite venue. For those that haven’t been there, it’s awesome. There are three bars, two of which face the stage and one in a separate room if you need a break from the action. The balcony area has an awesome view but unfortunately all the front seating and standing areas are reserved, but the view far the bar works just fine.
The show itself was fantastic as well. Even with only three members and no drummer, The Devil Makes Three still puts on incredibly energetic and fun shows. By the end of the night, the middle of the floor, where I was of course, had turned into the rootin’est, tootin’est jig mosh pit I’ve ever had the pleasure of being a part of.
Sorry for the usual lack of photos, things got pretty rowdy and almost every one I took ended up blurry, but thanks to The Devil Makes Three and The Depot for showing us a good time. If you find yourself in the Salty Valley, be sure to catch a show at The Depot, after swinging by Salty’s first of course. Cheers.
