Last night was magical. My favorite band in the world, Matt & Kim, came to one of Salt Lake’s finest venues, In The Venue, and brought the house down. Allow me to paint you a picture of the wonderful adventure that was the Matt & Kim extravaganza.
For some reason I thought it was a good idea to go back to school, so last night I was stuck in class until 8pm. I had also rode my bike there, so as soon as I got out, I raced home as fast as my little legs could peddle to grab my ticket and throw on some grubby clothes that I didn’t care about getting sweaty in the pit. I hopped back on the bicycle and flew to The Jackalope, a favorite local watering hole, to meet up with my partner in crime and Salty Peaks Blog celebrity, Mr. Andrew “Mop” Taylor. After a quick adult beverage, we mobbed down to In The Venue, weaving in and out of traffic like any safe cyclist would.
As we were locking our bikes outside In The Venue, we heard Matt & Kim playing. The bouncer informed us they had just gone on, so we ran straight in and pushed our way to the center of pit. Things were already going crazy. Matt & Kim have incredible stage presence and always put on the most fun shows. It’s just the two of them on stage and yet they go harder and get crazier than any other band I’ve seen. From Kim’s epic booty shaking and crowd walking to Matt’s keyboard gymnastics and general tom-foolery to the buck rap they play between songs, their concerts are truly a one-of-a-kind experience. At one point they even threw a ton of balloons into the crowd for us to blow up and throw when the beat dropped on the opening of “It’s A Fact (Printed Stained).”
Matt & Kim are one of those bands that genuinely love playing shows for their fans, and it shows in their performances. Besides the infectious energy, the absolute best part about a Matt & Kim show is their extreme appreciation of the audience. Between every song they said a little something about how much they loved us and how they couldn’t believe the energy in the room, which of course got the crowd even more pumped up and the pit only got crazier throughout the show. At one point there were at least 7 people crowd surfing at once, and about 30 throughout one song.
They play Good For Great for their encore which was a perfect way to end such an amazing, hectic, and sweat-filled show. Andrew and I then biked back to The Jackalope to attempt to calm our excitement with a couple more adult beverages, then ended the night with a mandatory trip to The Pie Hole. On a side note, don’t ever be the drunk a$$hole who knocks over and destroys a gumball machine, because that’s what some frat bro did right before we got to Pie Hole, and they were less than pleased with him.
I was too busy rocking my face off during the show getting elbowed in the head and getting covered in other peoples sweat to take pictures, but thankfully Mop and shop warbler Zac were there to grab some shots. I apologize for the blurriness, it was rowdy everywhere! We also aren’t the richest kids on the block, so these pics are coming to you cell phone style. But before you get deep in the pic gallery, let me leave you with words of wisdom Kim gave us during the show. Whenever you find yourself with a tough decision to make, take a step back and think, “What would a man with a mustache do?” Cheers.
Since I can’t remember the exact setlist, I figured I’d just put up the three album’s Matt & Kim has on Spotify since it’s pretty much all I’ve been listening too before and after the show.
