The benefits to the softer foam is a more comfortable fit, lighter weight construction, survives through multiple impacts, and slightly improved low-speed impact protection. The downside is minimal protection for high-force impacts, so use your best judgement when purchasing the hard hat, it does well for multiple low speed impacts but will not do much in a bad crash.
