Salty Peaks Staff Picks: Snowboards

Need some help picking out the right snowboard this year?  We asked our staff what boards they are stoked on, and here’s what they said.

FIRST FOR THE GUYS…

Rome Mod Rocker Jake’s pick is the Rome Mod Rocker (also available in wide). He says, “This board crushes way too hard! This new rocker version of the Mod is flat til just past the inserts then rockers up in the tip and tail, making it nice and stable on groomers and jumps, but still giving you the float and fun of the lifted contact points. I plan on riding this bad boy all up and down Brighton this season!”
Josh and Devin are both stoked on the Ride Machete (also available in wide): Devin says, “Ride again brings us another dependable, and long lasting snowboard with the 2012 Machete. This all mountain freestyle board will take you where ever you want to go. The lowrise rocker, a twin rockered shape that lifts the contact points out of the snow and has a nearly flat zone under foot, making transitioning from edge to edge at high speed smooth and easy. With the added Pop Rods the machete offers more pop, 85A Slimewalls and CleveEdge adds durability and a smooth ride to this award winning board. The only bad thing I’ve heard about this board is that it can be a little stiff. So if your looking for a board that can handle anything that you can throw at it, is long lasting, and has some of the best graphics in Ride’s line up, then the 2012 Machete should be your choice.” Josh also recommends the DC Ply as another good board option. Jones Mountain Twin Travis is stoked on the Jones Mountain Twin (also available in wide) and Neversummer Proto CT (also available in wide). He says, “I like these because they are both twin boards but they’re not designed for the park. You can take them anywhere and turn the entire mountain into your freestyle playground.” He also plans on riding the Burton Nug this year.
Randy’s pick is the DC MLF (we have the Iikka Pro Model, which is the same board with a different graphic). He says, “I’m a type of rider who wants one board for any and all conditions and treats the mountain like one big park. For the style of riding I do, and the DC MLF has been tested to the fullest and it gets my “thumbs up” of approval! With a true twin shape, this camber profiled love machine delivers all the pop you need to boost over that stump in the trees, charging that 80ft booter and holding your edge nice and firm while making a bee-line to the lodge for a cold one. With it’s “Structurn” base technology, you are assured to keep your speed in the pow and on hard pack, effortlessly. Another thing I have to point out is the radius to flat technology on all DC boards. This is a flat area past the inserts towards the nose and tail which give you extra added float and a nice stable surface while pressing out or stomping a landing. I completely fell in love with this board 1st run in.” DC MLF Iikka
Lib Box Scratcher Zac picks the Burton Meateaters Burden and the Lib Tech Burtner’s Box Scratcher: About the Box Scratcher, he says, “Being from the east coast, the Magne-Traction is a must have for the hardpack and icy day, while the BTX keeps it afloat in the pow. Flexible enough for all the jibs you can handle, this is a great do it all board.”
Chase says, “I am stoked to ride the Deadlung’s new pro model from Smokin’ this season because it has a super soft jibby flex and skate kicks which create specific press zones for pop and stability. RIP B.I.G.” Smokin Deadlung Biggie
Lib Tech TRS Drew is pumped on the Lib Tech TRS (Total Ripper Series). He says, “The C2 Power Banana (banana between your feet and camber at each end of the board) make this board the ultimate all terrain/freestyle vehicle for your feet. Awesome for park and all mountain, great for anyone who wants to have a good time.” (Looking for a wide TRS? Try the Skunk Ape) Drew also recommends the Burton Ration for its clean graphics and reasonable price.
Carlos picks the Rome Agent Rocker. He says, “One of Rome’s longest running boards, this season the Agent is offered in the rocker/camber combo “mountain pop.” This basically means you’re going to slay the resort to your fullest ability. Two small camber sections located just outside inserts make this board extremely hard-charge friendly, and with the new quick rip side cut you can cruise around effortlessly when you feel the need to get tricky.” (also available in wide) Rome Agent
Burton Mr. Nice Guy Jerry is excited for the Burton Mr. Nice Guy (also available in wide). He says, “This board has traditional camber, which seems to be hard to find these days. I like that it’s a true twin with twin flex and the original Alice in Wonderland graphics are awesome!” Jerry also recommends the Burton Custom Flying V (also available in wide) for a board that does it all.
Last but not least, Dennis’s picks for 2012 are the Neversummer Raptor / Raptor X, Neversummer swallowtail, and Lib Tech Birdman. Pick up one of these for the ultimate powder experience! raptor
AND FOR THE LADIES…
Erin says, “I like a softer, more playful board like the Never Summer Pandora. Although this is a great twin shaped board for freestyle, I would also recommend it for a beginner who wants to advance. The bi-lite fiberglass throughout allows it to be super light and stable at high speeds. In comparison to the Never Summer Infinity, this board is softer and perfect for myself as well as other lightweight female riders out there that want a legit board, without compromising quality.” Neversummer Pandora
Burton Lipstick Kerri says, “My board pick would be the Burton Lip-Stick. It’s a great all-around board. The V-rocker shape offers float in pow and stability/pop. A lot of companies offer similar technology, but the Channel System (exclusive to Burton) adds more joy to my ride. The Channel/EST binding combo, on the Lip-Stick, is comfortably smooth. It’s the only Lip-Stick you’ll catch me wearing.”
Steph picks the Roxy Ollie Pop and Gnu B-Street: About the Ollie Pop, she says, “This board is sweet because it is awesome for park, but it still rocks in any condition. I’m really excited for the C2BTX (rocker in between the feet and camber at the tip and tail) which makes it floaty in pow but you still have the camber to give you pop! I hate detuning my edges for park and then not being able to hold an edge in pipe or hardpack, Magne-Traction enables you to still have an edge because of the increased contact points, even when you detune.” Roxy Ollie Pop
Roxy Ally Kate says, “I am stoked on the Roxy Ally because it comes in ‘Less Narrow’ widths for chicks that like wider boards. Finally a girl’s board that really fits my size 10 feet. I also like the BTX shape because it is more playful than the C2BTX and has better float in powder. I think this board will be so fun all over the mountain. For something more agressive I would pick the Burton Feelgood Flying V or Neversummer Infinity and for a powder-specific board it would be the Neversummer Lotus.”
Libby is pumped on the Smokin’ Vixen because of it’s clash rocker (rocker between the bindings and positive camber outside the bindings) and magne-traction. “You can find me taking park laps on the Vixen all season long! If you prefer all rocker in your board the Gnu B-Street is also a great choice for park riding.” Smokin Vixen
Burton Nugget Ellery is stoked on the Burton Nugget. She says, “Great all-mountain powder board. More fun in powder and trees because it’s shorter so you have total control over the board instead of a huge out of control powder board.” (Guys, check out the Men’s Nug and Directional Nug.)
