Shaun White recently announced last month a new freestyle snow-sports league, aptly named The Snow League. This was something he had been teasing fans of the sport with for some time now. While free skiing is not officially apart of the event circuit right now, there are plans to add free skiing midway through the league season. Shaun claims the 5 event, year long competition series will change the face of competitive snowboarding.
Shaun White’s Snow League isn’t just another competition—it’s a platform designed to elevate the entire snowboarding and winter sports community. At its core, the league aims to promote professionalism and community, and create a league where year after year people can root for their favorite riders. 20 men and 16 women are to be selected from the World Snowboard Points List. In total, the league has a $1.5 million prize purse stretched across its whole season, the largest the sport has ever seen.
While riders will be obviously awarded a larger prize for podiuming, at each event every rider will be paid something regardless of how they place, creating an environment more focused on professionalism and season-long performance and sustainability. “We’re gonna pay the whole field; if you’ve qualified to get to the event, you will get compensated for being there,” White said. Right now it is incredibly expensive, time consuming, and difficult for riders to just travel to events. Hidden costs like air fare, lodging, and coaching are just some of the challenges pros have to face before they can even step on snow to compete. So to riders, having the assurance that their personal costs will be covered if they can just get there and compete, is a huge load off of their shoulders.
To many, this is comparable to how other mainstream sports leagues like the NFL operate. Of course players get paid according to their contract regardless of how many games they actually win. This is the standard that Shaun White is trying to set. He wants people to root for athletes in The Snow League like how they would root for players and teams in the NFL. There is potential for people to be able to purchase athlete specific merchandise like jerseys and other apparel which signifies to other fans who you’re rooting for. Community and culture is the name of the game here, and if Shaun White can accomplish that then he has a serious chance at making The Snow League a legitimate force in competitive snowboarding and free skiing.
