With summer comes the fun outdoor activities, or funtivities if you will. Quite possibly the best funtivity here in the salty valley is the Twilight Concert Series every Thursday in July and August. Allow to me to paint you a picture of the wonderful kick off show with The Walkmen opening for Beach House.
This lovely Thursday evening started with a casual bike ride to my friend Mop’s house, a fellow shop employee. The warm, just-rained air was refreshing after the weeks of stifling heat we recently endured. The whole city seemed reborn as I rode my way closer and closer towards downtown. Upon arrival, Mop and I regaled each other with tales of 4th of July adventures over some crisp beverages and an episode or two of Workaholics. When it came time for the festivities, we walked the two blocks to the nearest Trax station and took advantage of our fair city’s excellent public transportation.
Pioneer Park was alive. All walks of life gather for the Twilight Concert Series, and tonight was no exception. Even though it was free in previous years, the meager $5 ticket was no burden and completely worth such an event. We arrived in the middle of The Walkmen’s set to find an eager crowd and an array of food, beverage, and music vendors. Once The Walkmen finished, more friends were found and the main event began.
Beach House played an incredible set. The murmur of the crowd turned into an eruption of applause and cheers as Beach House took the stage. Pioneer Park was soon filled with their epic, atmospheric sound as the lead singers haunting voice echoed off the surrounding buildings. Everyone in the audience was entranced by the show, and it all went off without a hitch. If you ever get the chance to see Beach House live, especially for $5, be sure to take it. The night was concluded with stop at my favorite local late-night pizza place, The Pie Hole, then a peaceful nighttime bike ride home, full of recollection of the nights adventures.
If you find yourself in the Salt Lake area on a Thursday, stop by Pioneer Park for any one of the Twilight Concert Series, you will surely not be disappointed. I am not sure if I will be attending the next upcoming show, but JJ Grey and Mofro is opening for Raphael Saadiq so it will certainly be a wonderful time. Cheers.
