Little Cottonwood Canyon Draft EIS Comment Period – Future of the Cottonwoods

Are you informed on UDOT’s recent Canyon Draft Environmental Impact Study and the plan for the future of transportation and canyon congestion in Little Cottonwood Canyon?  What are your thoughts?

7/16/2021 – SW

With added congestion from new pass options and the growing Utah population, we need to take action to protect the access and conservation of these canyons along with public land as a whole.  Two ideas that have been developed from UDOT have been a gondola from the base of Little Cottonwood that would drop off at Snowbird and Alta, and the second option for road expansion that would act as a bus-only lane on heavily trafficked days, and a pedestrian/bike lane in the summer.

There are many loose ends and foreseeable problems with these plans such as the destruction of ecosystems for native plants and animals, visual and audible disruption, etc.  According to UDOT’s own proposal, implementing the gondola into the canyon won’t reduce private vehicles in the canyon (UDOT,LCC EIS, p.2-16).

If the goal is to reduce traffic and congestion in the canyons, start from the community’s points of origin, not the base of the canyon.  Driving to the parking lot to take the gondola will only add traffic to the road, not reduce it.  Increasing public transportation and allowing access for the community would create more jobs for people along with reducing the use of private vehicles that cause congestion.
